When does CIF open and close each year?
The cycle opens around October and closes mid-December. The 2026-27 round opened October 2025 and closed 16 December 2025. Outcomes are typically published the following May; the 2026-27 outcomes were published 22 May 2026.
How much can my school get?
The minimum is £20,000. There is no formally stated maximum. The average award in Round 13 was approximately £520,000 with a median closer to £200,000 to £250,000. Source: ESFA CIF outcomes 2026-27 (Round 13), verified 22 May 2026.
What disqualifies my trust from applying?
Receipt of School Condition Allocation, being in the School Rebuilding Programme for the same scope, federations that have not converted to academy status, and being above the small-MAT threshold (5 schools or 3,000 pupils).
Do I need a consultant to win?
No. Many trusts bid successfully in-house. Consultants are typically used by first-time bidders, complex multi-school bids, and trusts without in-house technical surveying.
Can a CIF loan be repaid early?
Generally yes, on standard DfE academy-loan terms. The trust confirms the position with DfE before drawing the loan.
What is the scoring weighting?
Project Need 60%, Project Cost 25%, Project Planning 15%. Each criterion is scored 0-10; the weighted total is out of 100.
What was the May 2026 success rate?
Approximately one in four bids was funded in Round 13: 871 projects funded against approximately £456 million awarded. The indicative funded threshold landed near 72 of 100 on the weighted grid. Source: ESFA CIF outcomes 2026-27 (Round 13), verified 22 May 2026.
How long do funded projects have to complete?
Projects funded under the 2026-27 round must complete by 31 March 2028. Extensions are granted only in narrowly evidenced circumstances.
Can I bid for solar panels through CIF?
PV is funded through the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme route rather than CIF. CIF can fund roof works that enable later PV installation.
Can a small MAT consolidate bids across schools?
A trust may submit multiple bids, one per project. There is no consolidation uplift; each project is assessed individually.
What if my bid is rejected?
Appeal only where there is a material error in the assessment. Otherwise strengthen the evidence and resubmit in the next cycle.
Does school contribution improve the score?
Yes, on a saturating curve. Each additional percentage point of contribution improves the Project Cost score with diminishing returns above approximately 15%.
What evidence is mandatory?
Condition survey, photographic record, three contractor quotations, bid-stage programme, risk register, governance sign-off note.
Can a VA diocese bid on behalf of multiple schools?
Yes. The diocese signs the application; each project is assessed individually.
When does the 2027-28 round open?
On the prior-cycle pattern, October 2026 open, mid-December 2026 close, May 2027 outcomes. ESFA confirms dates at the published opening.
